Somehow, word that Indianapolis Colts vice chairman Bill Polian was at the Stanford/Duke game Saturday has escalated. It went from a simple tweet by Kevin Weidl of Scouts Inc. to Polian being there to scout junior quarterback Andrew Luck.
Shocking, an overreaction to Colts’ Bill Polian at a Stanford game
Given the perception of panic by non-Colts fans about Colts fans, that should be no surprise.
For the all the conspiracy theorists, consider that Polian’s son Brian is Stanford’s recruiting coordinator. It wouldn’t be so outrageous to think Polian was there to watch his son’s team play. That’s especially reasonable since Polian’s other son, Chris, is now the team’s general manager and handles more of the personnel decisions now.
It's also reasonable to expect that if Polian was there to scout, maybe he was watching the Stanford offensive line. Don't forget, the Colts offensive line is pretty terrible. Just today they signed guard Seth Olsen off waivers.
Conversely, the Stanford line features Jonathan Martin, a legit top-10 pick if he comes out after his junior season. He could play whatever tackle spot rookie Anthony Castonzo can't.
Or maybe Polian was there watching guard David DeCastro, the kind of nasty interior lineman the Colts need.
Crazy talk here, I know, but maybe Polian was there scouting Stanford's draftable duo of tight ends Coby Fleener and Zach Ertz. After all, the Colts have a thing for tight ends, drafting five over the past eight years. Three of them, Dallas Clark, Brody Elridge and Jacob Tamme are still on the roster, as is undrafted free agent Mike McNeill.
But no, all of that makes too much sense. Of course Polian was there to scout Luck.
