Even though we’re only one game into the NFL season, the “Suck for Luck” campaign is in full effect across the league. It’s a misnomer to think that NFL teams are thinking about losing to draft a player – especially this early in the season. Fans, however, are a different story. For fans, every loss is a step toward drafting the Stanford junior quarterback. It’s almost not a race for the privilege of taking Luck first overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, it’s a competition.
Suck for Luck: 12 teams look like 2012 NFL Draft contenders for Andrew Luck
Judging things after one game, it appears there are 12 serious contenders for Luck's services. Not every bad team will be after Luck, though. Some teams – like the Tennessee Titans – may have a bad season but don't make sense because they already have a great or developing quarterback in place already. After the jump, the disastrous dozen teams who could be in position to take Luck.
Buffalo Bills
Current starter Ryan Fitzpatrick is in his final year of his contract, but the Bills are in contract talks with their starter. Thus far, Fitzpatrick has only 14 starts, so it's unlikely he'd earn a big enough contract to keep the Bills from taking Luck.
Miami Dolphins
Chad Henne is a classic yo-yo quarterback. When he's good, he shows a lot of promise but when he's bad it shows. The only other quarterback on the roster is Matt Moore. If Miami has the pick, it's almost guaranteed to be Luck.
Cincinnati Bengals
We've seen it before, but just because a team takes a quarterback in the second round the previous year doesn't mean they won't take one in the first the next. If Andy Dalton bounces back from a right arm injury, but still struggles the Bengals could go after Luck. Given the team's needs, though, it's less likely.
Cleveland Browns
As it's been stated on this site before, if the Browns are in a position to take Luck it is because Colt McCoy didn't play well enough. If that's the case, it would be almost a necessity to take Luck – despite how much Browns personnel men like McCoy.
Indianapolis Colts
Without Peyton Manning, it's absurd to think that any team, let alone the Colts, would intentionally lose games in order to draft Luck. If the first game of the season is any indicator, though, the Colts won't have to intentionally lose.
Denver Broncos
If the Broncos are in a position to take Luck, Kyle Orton has tanked and Tim Tebow has proven himself as unworthy of being a starting quarterback. New head coach John Fox has no commitment to either.
Kansas City Chiefs
Adam Schefter of ESPN seems to think the Chiefs will be in the running for Luck and should take him if they can.
Oakland Raiders
It's Al Davis. Anything can happen. Reasoning is worthless.
Dallas Cowboys
If Tony Romo continues to make bonehead mistakes late in games, the Cowboys will have no choice but to look for a different quarterback. Something about Landry Jones in Dallas – a weird name combination of the divorce between owner Jerry Jones and Tom Landry – sounds too good to be true.
Washington Redskins
The preseason favorite for Luck's services has gained momentum as not being the worst team in the NFL. Still, it's Rex Grossman and John Beck. A long losing streak could start any week.
San Francisco 49ers
Much like the Bengals with Dalton, it wouldn't shock anyone if the 49ers shunned second-round pick Colin Kaepernick in order to have Luck. Besides the obvious of being a local star at Stanford, Luck is the quarterback the 49ers haven't had since Steve Young.
Seattle Seahawks
Tarvaris Jackson is arguably the worst starting quarterback in the NFL. That should say worlds about the NFL talent of backup Charlie Whitehurst. It will be an interesting situation if Seattle, with Pete Carroll as head coach, has Luck and Southern California's Matt Barkley are available in the draft.
