Following two less-than-spectacular games against Rutgers and Virginia, questions about the NFL future of North Carolina's Quinton Coples are beginning to surface.
Concerns continue about Quinton Coples’ game
This season Coples moved to defensive end after starring last season as a tackle. After a two-sack game in the opener against James Madison, Coples has registered no sacks or tackles for loss.
Questions were brought up here after the Rutgers game, but now NFL evaluators are posing issues.
Talking to Rob Rang of NFL Draft Scout, one “team official” wondered where Coples would play at the next level.
“But he isn’t a quick-twitch pass rusher and why would you invest that type of draft pick into a left defensive end? You wouldn’t,” the source told Rang. “Many 4-3 teams are going to eventually move him inside to defensive tackle. He can give you a pass rush there and is so big and strong, he’ll be fine against the run.”
It’s true, Coples will be fine against the run. He’s told reporters in the past that run defense is his favorite part of the game. But his expectation is much more than that.
“I want to make sure that everyone knows I’m No. 1,” Coples recently told the Charlotte Observer. “I don’t want to just be No. 1 with certain people. I want to be No. 1 with everybody. ... That’s my whole goal, something I want to accomplish the next couple of months.”
To do that, Coples is going to have to quickly turn his season around.
