2012 NFL Draft Saturday recap: Concerns about Tyrann Mathieu, Bruce Irvin, Justin Blackmon

Some quick notes watching games yesterday:

For anyone out there wondering, playmaking LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu is only a true sophomore. He's an incredible player to watch in college football, but his skills might not translate to the NFL. He's generously listed at 5-foot-9, 175 pounds.

West Virginia's Bruce Irvin is getting a raw deal when he lines up at end in the team's 3-3-5 set. He's not strong enough to line up right over a tackle. When he got to take his hand out of the ground, he showed the explosiveness needed to play linebacker at the next level.

San Diego State’s

Ryan Lindley

was less than impressive against Michigan, competing just 23 of 48 passes. He struggles under pressure to reset his feet and deliver an accurate pass. Texas A&M’s

Ryan Tannehill

also had trouble with this.

Justin Blackmon

‘s lapse in intelligence fumbling out of the end zone shows why he’ll never overtake

Alshon Jeffery

as the top wide receiver in the 2012 NFL Draft. It also won’t be surprising if Notre Dame’s

Michael Floyd

passes him.
Alabama cornerback

Dre Kirkpatrick

finally had a solid game, though he did allow a few completions by Arkansas’

Tyler Wilson

.
When the site rankings were re-done, I was a little hesitant to place Alabama running back

Trent Richardson

at No. 4 overall player. Not anymore.
Need to go back and watch USC/Arizona State and Oregon/Arizona. A quick look at the stats shows that the Ducks’ LaMichael James is fully rebounded after a rough start to the season.
Personal favorite stat line: Toledo’s

Eric Page

had 13 receptions for 158 yards against Syracuse. He’s a non-BCS version of Oklahoma’s

Ryan Broyles

.

Robert Griffin III watch:

Against Rice, the ascending junior quarterback for Baylor completed 29 of 33 passes for 338 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran the ball for 51 yards and a score. Someone get his ticket to the Heisman Trophy ceremonies ready. Up next for Baylor is Kansas State.
Non-football: Jon Jones is awesome. In a terrible UFC 135 event featuring fat guys out of breath, he was worth the price of the pay-per-view.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
