Each week we’re going to give out the proverbial game ball to whomever had the college football performance and talk about their chances in the NFL.
Game ball of the week: Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor
The game ball this week goes to Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III. Against Rice on Saturday, he completed 29 of 33 passes for 338 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran the ball six times for 51 more yards and a touchdown. Although it was against Rice, six touchdowns against anyone is impressive.
Although he completed 87.9 percent of his passes, it was down from the previous week when he completed 90.9 percent of his passes against Stephen F. Austin. On the year, Griffin currently has more touchdown passes (13) than incomplete passes (12). A Heisman Trophy run seems to be in Griffin’s immediate future.
Griffin isn’t just a better version of Michigan’s Denard Robinson, though. Judging by the game he had against TCU in the first week of the season, he’s a legit NFL quarterback prospect. I currently list him as my 27th best junior or senior prospect in the nation. Compared to some draft analysts, that’s too low.
Baylor is largely a one-run scheme on offense, so that will be an area of growth at the next level. Griffin has shown improvement this season in his ball placement. His arm is solid and his release is quick. Obviously due to his athleticism, Griffin freelances a lot, but that might also be a coaching call.
It’s hard to find a comparison for Griffin, other than the obvious one of Michael Vick. That’s where I open it up to you. While trying to consider only his skills as a passer, who do you compare Griffin to?
