For his frequently jaw dropping efforts, Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month in September.
The No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft pass for 1,012 yards and four touchdowns (with two more rushing) in his first month of professional football.
He is the first Panthers rookie to win the award since quarterback Matt Moore in December, 2007. It goes without saying that Newton's career projects on a much higher curve than Moore's.
Washington Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan was awarded as the top rookie defensive player for the month. He finished with 12 tackles, two sacks, an interception, three passes defended and a forced fumble. He impressively stepped right in to start all three games for the Redskins this month.
Thus far, I've been wrong about the Kerrigan pick. Coming out of Purdue, I didn't think he had the lateral agility to be able to play linebacker in Washington's 3-4 scheme.
Now, any guesses on which rookies will take home the awards for October?
