ESPN has sold a scripted TV project to ABC, that project being a sports fan buddy comedy.
ESPN Develops Massachusetts Buddy Sitcom That Will Probably Be The Worst Thing
The project is described as a look at the relationship between four longtime guy friends, still living in their hometown outside of Boston, who gather once a week to watch one of their beloved teams play.
If you’ll recall, ESPN has tried Bro Comedy before. I read that and I can’t not think of this:
This is one of the dull, puzzling “Sports Guy” animated shorts that ran on ESPN.com in 2005. It wouldn’t really be fair to point to this as a harbinger of what we’re in for with Bro Dudes: The Dude Show or whatever, because ESPN is an enormous thing and I doubt that those involved in that is involved with this.
The fact remains: this will be a show about bros who bro together and watch sports and probably have bets and arguments about sports. By this point we have seen approximately 50 billion TV shows and movies that run with this setup, complete with exposed-brick apartment with a dart board and framed “Beers of the World” post hanging on the walls. I’ve watched far too much crappy TV in my life to say, “well, let’s wait to see how it turns out.” I’m pre-emptively judging. But wait, one guy is a real “wild card,” and another guy can’t watch the Big Game because he promised his wife that he would take her to the zoo!!! Destroy your television.
