Brewers, Rangers and Rays: Three Teams In Search Of First MLB World Series Title

With the MLB Playoffs starting, here’s a look at three franchises which hope this postseason brings their first World Series title.

There are six teams in MLB Playoffs history that have played in the World Series, but never won a title. This postseason, three of those franchises have a chance to shrink that number to two.

The Brewers, Rangers and Rays are not often at the top of those ubiquitous “Most Tortured Fanbase” rankings, but how else would you explain the feeling of reaching as close to the trophy as possible without claiming it. The only thing worse than being a doormat is finishing in second place.

But the Rays have only existed since 1998 and have continued to win with less to the where general manager Andrew Friedman could replace Brad Pitt’s mug on Moneyball movie posters. The Rangers and Brewers are particularly chilling cases. The Rangers have been enfranchised since 1961 (when they were the Washington Senators). The Brewers came into existence as the Seattle Pilots in 1969. Only the teams’ in their former haunts, the Nationals and Mariners, can looks at these teams with envy. Those sad sacks are the only two teams never to win a pennant.

So while the world watches to see if the Phillies can live up to their billing as the most sure-bet World Series winner or if the Yankees can add to their embarrassment of World Series riches, the bubbling storyline could be one of these teams’ claiming the first World Series trophy in franchise history. Milwaukee’s not the sexiest town, but wouldn’t you rather see the Brew Crew make history than another rendition of the Big Market All-Stars battling for another trinket to stick on the mantle?
