The South Florida Bulls entered the 2011-12 season expecting to be a contender in their Big East conference. A preseason poll had them projected to finish third in the Big East, behind the West Virginia Hokies and the Pittsburgh Panthers.

In the end, the Bulls put together a solid season and finished sixth in a very stacked and competitive conference. They headed to the Big East Tournament with a 20-13 overall record, 12-6 in conference play.

In the 2012 Big East Tournament, USF received a bye to the second round and entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed. They defeated the Villanova Wildcats in their first tournament game by a final score of 56-47 to advance. The run for the Bulls came to an end in the Big East quarterfinals, as they dropped a tough 57-53 overtime loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Nevertheless, they still made the NCAA Tournament, facing Cal in the First Four for the right to face No. 5 Temple in the second round of the Midwest region.
