NCAA Bracket 2012: How Cincinnati Basketball Got To March Madness

Cincinnati is dancing after a run to the finals of the 2012 Big East Tournament.

The Cincinnati Bearcats put together quite the run in the Big East Tournament, perhaps putting aside any doubts that they’d be in the NCAA Tournament field in the process. Cincinnati already was on fairly solid ground ahead of the tournament, but a run to the finals with wins over Georgetown and Syracuse proved to be a significant resume-booster. As a result, Cincinnati is dancing, despite falling to Louisville in the Big East Tournament Championship.

Cincinnati finished in a logjam for fourth in the Big East standings along with Georgetown and South Florida. The Bearcats compiled a 12-6 conference record that included regular season wins over Georgetown, Lousville and UConn. However, it was the non-conference record that was cause for concern with Selection Sunday approaching.

Wins over Georgia and Oklahoma were Cincinnati’s best in the out-of-conference slate, which doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence. A loss to Presbyterian still looks bad, and the Bearcats also dropped games to Marshall and Xavier.

However, Cincinnati peaked at the right time, making its run in the Big East Tournament before falling victim to tired legs in a listless finale. The run was good enough to ensure the Bearcats were dancing, and they may have boosted their seeding in the process. Cincinnati is the No. 6 seed in the East regional, and will face No. 11 Texas.
