Matt Kalil Putting On Weight Before 2012 NFL Combine

Ryan Kalil is getting ready for the 2012 NFL Draft Combine at API in Phoenix. From there, the former USC Trojan has been publishing a diary to The Sporting News detailing his preparations for the draft. According to Kalil, one of the biggest differences between training at a professional facility and training on campus is the meals. With a regimented diet in place, the offensive tackle has already added 15 pounds to his frame.

The food I’m eating is high quality and doesn’t have a lot of fat. When you’re taking in those fatty foods, it doesn’t allow your muscles to recover as fast and doesn’t allow for proper muscle growth. I’ve noticed a big difference. I’ve gained about 15 pounds, but I’ve also lost body fat while gaining weight. It’s a healthy weight gain.

I definitely have a lot more energy and more stamina. The biggest difference is when I’m working out, I feel better. I don’t feel sluggish from putting bad things in my body.

According to Kalil, he consumes an average of 5,500-5,800 calories a day on his new diet, which would have been near impossible to follow at USC while trying to find time to go to class. Kalil is still projected as one of the top draft picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. The SB Nation blog Mocking The Draft has him going No. 2 overall to the St. Louis Rams.
