2012 NFL Draft: Round 7 Coverage

I don’t know why, but this is all kind of amazing. ESPN had about a minute to kill after the end of the draft, so naturally it was time to tee-off on Mel Kiper. You may know some of these facts, or perhaps not, but they’re all pretty amazing. And no, they’re not about his hair.

First, Mel Kiper just learned to use a computer a few years ago. For someone who makes a living scouting, this is kind of amazing. After all, it’s easier to rummage through tapes digitally.

So there’s a tradition for Mr. Irrelevant, the final pick in the NFL Draft. Each year, Paul Salata announces the pick, and the player chosen with the final selection in the draft is showered with gifts. It’s somewhat of a dummy prize, and somewhat cool at the same time. After all, a free trip to Newport Beach isn’t bad!

This year got just a little bit awkward. There’s usually some semblance of suspense surrounding the Mr. Irrelevant announcement, especially since picking the final round is like throwing darts. It’s built up on television and is something to look forward to.

It was the SEC representing at the top of the round, with Justin Anderson from Georgia the first player off the board. This year’s Mr. Irrelevant, the honorary title bestowed upon the final pick in the draft, was Chandler Harnish, a quarterback from Northern Illinois.

243. Green Bay Packers: Tennessee-Chattanooga QB B.J. Coleman, 6’3”, 233 pounds

247. Cleveland Browns: Alabama TE Brad Smelley, 6’2”, 237 pounds

These ESPN player cards have been pretty amazing so far. Not really for stats or anything else, but for the shots of players mugging for the camera. Some are serious, others are smiling, and Vontaze Burfict even blew a kiss to the camera.

And then there was Quinton Coples. It’s not so much his expression, but what he’s doing: Pointing over and over to his Carolina blue watch, letting y’all know what time it is.

It was only a matter of time before Bill Belichick took a questionable-character guy in efforts to reform him to the “Patriot Way,” and mid-seventh round, with the selection of Nebraska corner Alfonzo Dennard, it finally happened. Dennard spent some time in jail before the draft after allegedly punching a police officer. Once touted as a possible Day 2 selection, he’s fallen far enough for the Patriots to feel the risk is low enough.
