Cardinals Free Agents 2012: Cardinals Hope To Sign Calais Campbell Before Free Agency Begins

Despite acquiring quarterback Kevin Kolb from the Philadelphia Eagles after the lockout ended, and signing him to a $60 million contract, rumors continue to swirl that the Arizona Cardinals will pounce on quarterback Peyton Manning once the Indianapolis Colts decide to release him. Part of the reason the Cardinals are believed to be interested in Manning is that the rest of the roster, particularly on defense, is playoff-caliber, and a future Hall of Fame quarterback put them back on top in the NFC West.

One of the key cogs on defense has been Calais Campbell, a 6-foot-8, 300-pound defensive end who has 180 tackles and 21 quarterback sacks in 46 starts over the last three seasons. The two sides have been talking contract throughout the season, but have yet to reach a deal. The Cardinals may have no choice but to franchise Campbell, which is projected to be worth nearly $11 million in 2012.
