The Browns were prepared to use their franchise tag on LB D’Qwell Jackson. Instead, they were able to sign him to a multi-year contract.

One of the Cleveland Browns' many goals in free agency was to hang onto linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, who was an impending free agent. The Browns on Monday announced that problem has been taken care of -- the two sides reached a multi-year contract agreement.

There’s no word on the length of the deal or the terms involved.

Jackson was widely expected to receive the franchise tag had the two sides not reached a deal. The franchise tag would have guaranteed him around $9 million in 2012 so it’ll be interesting to see what the final numbers on his deal look like.

Jackson is a 2006 second-round pick. The Browns will announce the deal at a Monday afternoon press conference.

Jackson's signing now leaves the Browns with the franchise tag available. One option could be Peyton Hillis, who is scheduled to be a free agent.
