Some Think Vincent Jackson Ends Up Getting Franchise Tag From Chargers

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent on March 13 and the belief was that the Chargers were not going to hit Jackson with the franchise tag. There are still some who believe the franchise tag is a possibility for Jackson, including Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports.

“I know there are seven or eight teams lined up for Jackson, but I think [Smith] is going to tag him,” said an AFC team executive whose team is interested in Jackson. “That would be a total A.J. move, plus I think he’s going to have a hard time with the fan base if they let [Jackson] go.”

Cole notes that part of the reason teams haven’t placed the tag on players yet is the uncertainty of the cost of doing so. It’s possible tagging Jackson could cost the Chargers around $13.7 million for just one season. This would be the second straight year the Chargers would have franchised Jackson. Jackson was one of the few free agents in 2011 that was termed a restricted free agent, because of the expiring CBA, and was franchise tagged.
