Chargers Free Agency: Nick Hardwick Gets A New Contract

The San Diego Chargers re-signed center Nick Hardwick to a new three-year deal, just hours before the start of free agency on Tuesday. Hardwick was poised to become a free agent. The 30-year-old has been a starter basically ever since his rookie season in 2004 when he appeared in 14 games. Since then, he has started all 103 games in which he's appeared, including all 16 of the games during the last two years.

With Hardwick in the middle, the Chargers have been one of the top offenses in the league. Last year, the Chargers were the fifth-best scoring offense (average of 25.4 points per game) and were sixth in yards per game (393.1). Most of that was because of their passing offense, though, as the Chargers were 16th in rushing yards.

The Chargers are likely looking to bolster their offensive line after they released left tackle Marcus McNeill. Jared Gaither, the player who replaced McNeill after he went down with injury, is currently an unrestricted free agent.
