Saints Coach ‘Confident’ Drew Brees Will Show Up

The New Orleans Saints placed their franchise tag on superstar quarterback Drew Brees during the offseason, in order to prevent Brees from hitting the free agent market. At last word, there has been no progress in attempts at reaching a contract extension and Brees has expressed his frustration at the situation.

Head coach Joe Vitt -- who is filling in for the suspended Sean Payton -- feels “confident” that Brees will attend training camp under the franchise tag. Vitt spoke with Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and had this to say about the situation:

“Listen, I don’t think anybody thought this was going to be easy. We talked about the lockout last year, ‘Well, they’re going to come back then, they’re going to come back here.’ I think everybody knew it was going to come back to the 23rd hour and it would get done. There’s a lot of revolving pieces Mickey (Loomis) has to get in with the cap and so on and so forth. This is going to get done, and it’s going to get done when Drew and Mickey know what’s best for our football team and we can move forward.”

Brees did not attend OTAs with the Saints, giving backup quarterback Chase Daniel the bulk of the snaps during team activities.
