Drew Brees, Saints To Meet For Franchise Tag Grievance

The New Orleans Saints have had plenty of issues to deal with during the 2012 offseason. The most pressing issue at the moment is now the Drew Brees contract situation. The July deadline to sign franchise tenders is looming and the superstar quarterback is still in search of a new contract. The two sides have been far apart in recent months as talks regarding a new deal have been halting.

Steve Wyche of NFL.com reports that Brees will be in Philadelphia on Wednesday to argue a franchise tag grievance against the NFL. The current franchise tag the Saints have put on Brees would pay him $16.4 million for the 2012 season. Brees believes that the Saints will also place the franchise tag on him in 2013. That would be the third time in his career Brees would receive the franchise tag, which should result in a 44 percent raise in salary. The Saints will argue that since they have only placed the tag on Brees twice, it should only result in a 20 percent increase. Brees was previously tagged by the San Diego Chargers in 2005.

The outcome of the grievance ruling should set the bar fairly well for any contract negotiations with Brees going forward.
