Super Bowl Concern: Giants Offensive Line Needs To Protect Eli Manning

The New York Giants earned a Super Bowl XLVI berth on Sunday with their overtime win over the San Francisco Giants in the NFC Championship Game. They'll meet the New England Patriots in Indianapolis in two weeks, but they still have a bit of work to do before then.

One of New York's issues that needs addressing is their shaky offensive line and the amount of protection that Eli Manning has been receiving as of late. Specifically, the lack thereof. Ed Valentine at Big Blue View sheds some more light on the situation:

The Giants Offensive Line: Yes, the San Francisco front seven on defense is outstanding. And yes, the Giants are in the Super Bowl. The Giants, though, have serious long-term issues to address on their offensive line. That group nearly got Manning killed on Sunday. He was sacked six times and hit probably a dozen more. Without his ability to move deftly in the pocket he could have been sacked twice as many times. As we have seen so many times this season, there was rarely anywhere for Giants running backs to go, except to the ground. I’m not even going to bother going over the personnel issues. I don’t want to ruin my good mood.

Manning certainly took a ton of punishment in the Championship Game and the Giants likely cannot afford their quarterback to be as exposed against the Pats.

Here’s a look at the complete NFL playoffs bracket. For more on the Patriots and their Super Bowl run, check out SB Nation’s Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit as well as SB Nation Boston. For more on the Giants and their Super Bowl appearance, visit Giants blog Big Blue View and SB Nation New York.
