Giants Vs. Patriots Is The Fifth Super Bowl Rematch

The 2012 Super Bowl is obviously garnering a lot of hype as a rematch of the classic game in 2008 between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. What isn't being mentioned much is that championship rematches, while rare, haven't been all that uncommon. In fact, there have been five in the 46-year history of the Super Bowl.

The most recent occurred in 1996, when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers for their fifth ever title. The two teams had previously met up in 1976 and '79, and are the only two teams to play each other three times in a Super Bowl. The Cowboys also played back-to-back Super Bowls against the Buffalo Bills in 1993 and '94 to cap a four-year stretch run of losses in the game by the Bills.

The Cincinnati Bengals lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the team's only two Super Bowl appearances in 1983 and '89. The Washington Redskins and the Miami Dolphins played each other in 1973 and '83, splitting the series. The Dolphins took the first game, 14-7, but couldn't seal the deal the second time in a 27-17 loss.
