Super Bowl XLVI: Examining The Patriots Story Lines

No team has ever been wont for motivation heading into the Super Bowl, and the New England Patriots are no exception. Not only will they be looking to avenge their loss against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII, they could cement themselves as one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history with their fourth championship in 10 years. The question is, which storyline is a bigger motivating factor for New England?

The Pats were 18-0 heading into the 2008 Super Bowl, and on their to becoming perhaps the greatest team in the history of the NFL if they could only get past an underdog Giants team. Then this happened, leading to a Giants touchdown and, ultimately, a Lombardi Trophy. That day still bring painful memories back to Patriots fans, and a win next Sunday would go long way towards easing their troubled minds.

Of course what's one game in the grand scheme of history? Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are trying to become arguably the best ever head coach-quarterback combination the game has ever seen. While the "dynasty" talk has died down in the seven years since the Pats won their last Super Bowl, few would be able to deny the incredible body of work that Brady and Belichick have put together over the years.

The SB Nation blog Pats Pulpit put together a little poll to find out exactly where fans stand on the matter. The “revenge” storyline holds a slight advantage at the moment, though there is still plenty of time to weigh in and discuss before the big game on Feb. 5.
