Super Bowl 2012: Bill Belichick Not Thinking About Retirement

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is heading to his fifth Super Bowl appearance and perhaps fourth Super Bowl title on Sunday. He would be one of only two head coaches in NFL history to accomplish the feat of foru Super Bowl wins. Belichick is also a few months shy of turning 60. Some sports analysts have been speculating whether the Pats chief is contemplating retirement sooner rather than later.

Christopher Price of WEEI in Boston reports that retirement doesn’t appear to be on Belichick’s mind at the moment. Belichick addressed the media on Friday morning in Indianapolis and was asked about whether he would walk away if the Patriots won their fourth Super Bowl title under his watch on Sunday.

I enjoy all the aspects of the job. I enjoy the team-building, the drafting, the free agents, team acquisitions - those kind of things. I enjoy bringing in the young players and working with guys who haven’t been in the NFL and teaching them the basic fundamentals in how to become a professional football player for the New England Patriots.

And I enjoy working with the veteran players, the Tom Bradys and the Vince Wilforks and the Wes Welkers and all those kind of players that can do really special things because of their not only talent, but experience. And I enjoy the competition on a weekly basis. Not just on Sundays, but the preparation leading up into the game. So I enjoy all of it. It beats working.

It seems unlikely at this point that Belichick will announce his retirement if the Patriots walk away with the victory on Sunday. If they should lose to the New York Giants, you can probably count it out altogether.
