One week Dre Kirkpatrick is winning a national championship for Alabama and the next he's getting charged with marijuana possession. According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, Kirkpatrick was busted early Tuesday morning for alleged possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. There was a bond of $120 posted. No other details were revealed about the arrest.
2012 NFL Draft: Dre Kirkpatrick charged with marijuana possession
Kirkpatrick, a likely high first-round pick, is listed at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds on his booking sheet. He’s coming off an All-American season at cornerback for the Crimson Tide and was often tasked with shutting down the opposing team’s top receiver.
The major question is how this may affect Kirkpatrick’s NFL Draft status. Technically speaking, if he hasn’t signed with an agent, he has until tomorrow to rescind his draft declaration. That’s extremely unlikely, however.
The key for Kirkpatrick over the next few months is how he handles the interview process at workouts and the NFL Scouting Combine. With the rookie wage scale in place, NFL teams won’t be putting as much money into a character risk. So if Kirkpatrick shows contrition and interviews well, he should still be a top 10 pick.
h/t to The Big Lead for pointing this one out.
