Soon, perhaps quite soon, you’ll no longer have to see the name McCourt in these pages, at least not nearly as often as you’ve been seeing it for the last year or so.
Everything Coming Up Roses (i.e. Dollars) For McCourts
Pretty soon (if not soon enough) we’ll likely have heard the last of Frank and Jamie McCourt. But first there are a few hundred million dollars to be gotten.
The latest McCourt news?
Thursday, a judge signed off on the McCourts’ divorce settlement, and Frank owes Jamie $131 million. I think she got all the houses, too. Should be good through the end of this year, anyway.
But don’t feel too terribly sorry for Frank. It gets sort of complicated, but according to ESPN.com’s Lester Munson, McCourt might soon be getting a lovely little -- I mean, huge -- settlement check of his own ...
None of the lawyers involved in the McCourt-Bingham dispute would discuss it with ESPN.com, but there is little doubt that it will be one of the largest legal malpractice cases in the history of American jurisprudence. If the auction goes badly, McCourt’s damages could be more than $500 million.
Now, it's true that Frank McCourt's piled up some serious debts over the years. But he still owns the Dodger Stadium parking lots, which are worth about as much as endless oceans of concrete can be worth. This is just an educated guess, but I suspect than when everything's shaken out, McCourt will have lost the Dodgers but escaped with a significant fortune despite having, in humiliating fashion, run an immensely valuable property into the ground.
I guess sometimes being in the 1 Percent ain’t so bad after all.
