No. 15 Virginia vs. Virginia Tech Final: Hokies Stun In-State Rivals 47-45

The loss drops the Cavaliers out of a tie for first-place in the ACC while giving new life to what’s been a disappointing season for Virginia Tech.

After an 0-4 start to ACC play, the Virginia Tech Hokies desperately needed a win Sunday against their archrival, the No. 17 Virginia Cavaliers, if they were going to have any chance of getting over the hump and making the NCAA Tournament after falling on the wrong side of the bubble the last few seasons.

And while the victory was certainly not very aesthetically pleasing, Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg will take it, as the Hokies beat Tony Bennett’s squad at their own game, winning a 47-45 defensive battle on the Cavaliers home court.

Mike Scott, Virginia’s star forward, could never get going, as the 6’8 senior was held more than six points below his average, scoring 10 points on 4-9 shooting.

For Virginia Tech, the star of the game was 6'5 senior forward Dorenzo Hudson, who had 12 huge points off the bench, including 6 in the final two minutes, despite being removed from the starting line-up recently.

Both teams will have to regroup quickly, as the Hokies have a rare late non-conference game against BYU on Wednedsay Jan. 25 while the Cavaliers travel to Raleigh to play a tough North Carolina State team on national TV next Saturday.
