Senior Bowl weigh-ins are complete and they featured a lot of what we expected. Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams is huge (6-foot-7, 323 pounds) and Alabama wide receiver Marquis Maze is not (5-foot-7, 184 pounds). In front of scouts and media members, football players performed the meat market portion of the week getting measured in their underpants. But just what can be ascertained from this (sort of creepy) part of Senior Bowl week? (See full weigh-in results here)
With offensive tackles, arm length is nearly as important as height and weight. Arms shorter than 33 inches typically raise a red flag. Coming out of the weigh-ins, it's clear Iowa State's Kelechi Osemele doesn't have to worry about his arm length. He had 35 1/2-inch arms, the longest at the Senior Bowl. He was followed in arm length by Georgia's Cordy Glenn (35 1/8) and UAB's Matt McCants (35).
2012 Senior Bowl: Some thoughts on the weigh-in portion
Naturally the weigh-ins also brought up questions about tweener players like Alabama's Courtney Upshaw and South Carolina's Melvin Ingram. Both came in at under 6-foot-2 and more than 270 pounds with short arms. In the 2007 draft, the same thing happened to LaMarr Woodley and he dropped to the second round. But tape doesn't lie. Woodley proved it was unwise to pass on him and he's developed into one of the best 3-4 linebackers in the NFL. The same could happen to Upshaw and Ingram.
Of course, size can never hurt. Boise State George Iloka was the biggest safety at 6-foot-3 and 222 pounds with a wingspan of 81 5/8 inches. For wide receivers, hand size is considered an important attribute. Arizona's Juron Criner has the biggest hands of a wide receiver at 10 1/2 inches.
All eyes were on quarterbacks Kellen Moore and Russell Wilson. It should be no surprise that both came in at under 6-foot. Wilson measure 5'10 1/2, which made some draft analysts on Twitter immediately say it hurt his stock. That's not exactly true. Everyone, especially NFL scouts, knew Wilson wasn't 6-foot. During a play, how big of an impact is there in a difference between 5'11 and 5'10 1/2? It's minimal. The practice portion of the Senior Bowl is where Wilson and Moore have to shine.
