Super Bowl XLVI will feature Peyton Manning's biggest rival (Tom Brady) as well as his little brother (Eli Manning) which means we'll be talking plenty about the Indianapolis Colts QB over the next two weeks. But the larger issue surrounding Manning is his health, his $28 million roster bonus due in March and his future with the Colts organization.

Manning doesn’t speak publicly very often but he conducted a lengthy interview with Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star this week and there were several notable items from the Colts quarterback. Definitely read the entire article.

Among the highlights:

  • Manning said that GM Ryan Grigson had indicated to him that owner Jim Irsay, and not Grigson, will make the ultimate decision on his future. “One thing he (Grigson) kind-of, sort-of told me, without really wanting to tell me, was that Irsay will be the guy I’m going to sit down and talk with,” Manning said. This had been hinted at before.
  • The quote above also indicates that he and Irsay have yet to discuss his future. He says they will at some point in the future.
  • Manning says he’s still at the facility working out and rehabbing which suggests he is not yet healthy. There were no other updates on his health.
  • Manning indicated that the Colts facility is not a very happy place to be right now. He expressed sadness that many coaches had been fired. “I’m not in a very good place for healing, let’s say that,” he said, referring to the practice facility. “It’s not a real good environment down there right now, to say the least. Everybody’s walking around on eggshells. I don’t recognize our building right now. There’s such complete and total change.”
