Report: Francisco Cordero Signs With Blue Jays

The market for closers this offseason appears to be rapidly closing, so former Reds closer Francisco Cordero has decided to take a job offer at a lower pay grade and status, according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal:

Source: Cordero to #BlueJays, pending physical. One year, $4.5M. Will set up for Santos. #MLB

That’s about half the rate he might have gotten as a closer; he’s been pretty consistent (and healthy) piling up saves for the Brewers and Reds for the last eight years. On the other hand, Cordero is 37 and so teams might have been leery of him suddenly declining at that age.

Cordero will set up for Sergio Santos, who was acquired by the Blue Jays from the White Sox. Santos had bouts of save-blowing for the White Sox, so if he begins to fail again, the Jays will at least have an experienced closer in the bullpen who can take over the role.
