Tim Tebow earned the right to be the Denver Broncos starting quarterback heading into 2012 training camp, or so John Elway said back on Jan. 17, a few short days after Denver's season ended.
2012 NFL Draft: Broncos Looking for more Quarterbacks
However, Elway has made it clear that the team will be looking for more quarterbacks this offseason, especially with Brady Quinn set to become a free agent, according to the Denver Post.
Elway was quoted as saying that he is looking for “the big athlete who can throw the ball from the pocket.”
That phrase isn’t one often used to describe Denver’s current starting quarterback, and while Tebow had a magical run, he still has a lot to prove heading into next season.
While the many believe the Broncos could just be looking to add depth, it seems Elway wants to give any newcomer a chance to compete for the job.
"Anybody who comes in at any position is going to think they have a chance to compete," the Broncos' vice president of football operations went on to tell the Denver Post. "Any free agent or anybody that comes in here when we start training camp is going to be competing for jobs.
There are a number of talented signal callers that will be available in the mid and late rounds should Denver decide to go that route. Kirk Cousins of Michigan State had a huge week at the Senior Bowl, and seems to fit what Elway is looking for in a quarterback.
Another player Denver could target is Arizona State's Brock Osweiler. At 6-feet-8-inches tall, Osweiler is surprisingly athletic and has a huge arm. The Broncos could spend a mid round selection on Osweiler and allow him some time to develop.
Any quarterback brought into Denver is likely to continue to fuel Tim Tebow's fire. I personally don't think Tim Tebow is the long term answer as Denver's franchise quarterback for reasons that aren't worth getting into. But if anyone thinks a mid-round or free agent quarterback is going to slow this guy's will to be that franchise guy, they've got another thing coming.
