Scott Hairston Re-Signs With Mets

Scott Hairston, son and brother of men named “Jerry Hairston”, signed on for another year as a major league player.

Scott Hairston has been about the league-averagest of league-average players over his eight-year major league career. His .244/.303/.437 triple-slash line indicates a mediocre batting average, but some plate discipline and a little power, producing an OPS+ of 96, just below the baseline of 100 for "average".

He can play all three outfield positions. In 2011, he posted an OPS+ of 111 for the New York Mets, which was enough for them to re-sign him, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post:

Can now confirm that Scott Hairston was indeed re-signed by #MetsThis isn’t a sexy move. It isn’t a bad move. It’s about the most average of moves.

The most interesting thing about Hairston is that no fewer than five members of his extended family, including him, have played major league baseball. His grandfather Sam Hairston played in a handful of games for the 1951 White Sox (he was their second African-American player, after Minnie Miñoso); his uncle John Hairston had a similar cup of coffee with the 1969 Cubs, and his father Jerry Hairston was a longtime backup outfielder, mostly with the White Sox. You're probably familiar with Scott's brother, also named Jerry Hairston, who played for the Nationals and Brewers in 2011 and who recently signed with the Dodgers.

Perhaps one day a fourth generation of Hairstons will play in the major leagues. Until then, Scott and Jerry Jr. soldier on.
