Remember Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery?

Of course you do. What does he have to do with baseball?

Well, nothing, except that the Baltimore Orioles have signed a 26-year-old Taiwanese lefthander who could qualify in that category:

Chen has pitched for the last four years in NPB in Japan, which would qualify him for “international.” His strikeout rate took a precipitous drop in 2011 from 7.3 per nine innings to 5.1, which could qualify under “mystery.” He also pitched for his home country in the 2008 Olympics. Here are his complete NPB statistics for the Chunichi Dragons.

According to the Ken Rosenthal tweet referenced above, the contract will be a “multi-year deal.”; Connolly followed with a tweet that said it was for “three guaranteed years.” The Orioles have been in need of pitching for quite some time, so perhaps some of Chen’s mystery can translate to success in Baltimore.
