The Detroit Tigers are the American League Central champions after defeating the Royals 6-3 Monday night in Kansas City. Miguel Cabrera was 4-for-5 with his league-leading 44th home run and now has sole possession of the league lead in each triple crown category. He is trying to become the first triple crown winner since Carl Yastrzemski did it in 1967.

Jhonny Peralta got the Tigers on the board with a solo homer in the fifth inning off of Royals starter Bruce Chen. Cabrera started a five-run sixth inning with his home run. After Prince Fielder, who was also 4-5 on the day, scored on an error by center fielder David Lough, Gerald Laird delivered the big blow, with a three-run double.

Rick Porcello went five scoreless innings before surrendering a home run to Alex Gordon. The Royals would add another run in the sixth on a Jeff Francoeur double play and in the eighth on a Francoeur single, but Jose Valverde closed the game.

The Tigers win eliminates the Chicago White Sox, who won earlier against the Cleveland Indians.
