Advantage, home-field?

In the new “2-3” Division Series format—two games at the lower seed’s home ballpark, then three at the higher seed’s park—the team with home-field advantage, the high seed, won’t enjoy that advantage unless the series lasts the maximum five games. In fact, in a sweep, the home-field advantage (which admittedly isn’t worth all that much) will reside with the lower-seeded team.

Before this season, the Division Series was “2-2-1,” with the high seed playing Games 1, 2, and 5 at home. The new format was adopted to eliminate an off day.

Anyway, in order to keep off days to a minimum, and to ensure that the team with home-field advantage actually plays more games at home, I propose a “4-1” format. The first four games would be played at the top seed’s park, and if they can’t dispense with their lower-ranked opponent by then, Game 5 will be contested on the underdog’s field.
