Report: Scott Rolen likely retiring

Scott Rolen made the last out of the 2012 NLDS, which might have been the last at-bat of his career.

Scott Rolen, a 17-year veteran who has played for the Phillies, Cardinals, Blue Jays and Reds, is preparing for retirement, according to Bob Nightengale of the USA Today.

Rolen played 92 games for the Cincinnati Reds this year, hitting .245/.318/398 with eight home runs. In the 2012 National League Division Series, though, he made a critical error in Game 3 that led to a Reds loss, and he was the last out of the series in Game 5, striking out with the tying run on first.

Over his career, Rolen made the All-Star team seven times, was voted the Rookie of the Year award in 1997, took home eight Gold Gloves, and won a World Series championship with the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals.

The 37-year-old Rolen has had injury problems throughout his career, playing fewer than 130 games in nine of his 17 seasons. His best season was 2004 with the Cardinals, when he hit .314/.409/.598, with a career-high 34 home runs and a Gold Glove.
