Tigers vs. Yankees, 2012 ALCS: Detroit and New York will battle for AL crown

The Yankees and Tigers will meet in the ALCS beginning Saturday with both teams looking for a quick turnaround following Game 5 wins in the ALDS.

Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Fresh off Game 5 wins in the ALDS, the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees won't have much time to celebrate as the American League Championship Series begins Saturday.

The Yankees advanced to the ALCS with a 3-1 win against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. New York was forced to use ace CC Sabathia in Game 5 against Baltimore and will now turn to Andy Pettitte in the ALCS opener. New York has home-field advantage in the series and will host the first two games before going on the road.

The Tigers were also forced to use their ace in Game 5 of the ALDS as Justin Verlander pitched a complete game shutout to knock off the Oakland Athletics. With Verlander unavailable in Game 1, Doug Fister will get the start for the Tigers. Detroit will host Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary). If the series goes to a sixth or seventh game, they will be played in Yankee Stadium

While neither ace will start the series opener, they are currently scheduled to face off in Game 3 in Detroit on Tuesday. Assuming neither is used out of the bullpen in the series, a decisive Game 7 could also be a matchup of Verlander and Sabathia.

New York held a slight advantage in the regular season, winning six of 10 games against Detroit. Both teams struggled at times offensively in the ALDS with New York averaging 3.2 runs per game and the Tigers averaging 3.4 runs per game.
