South Carolina circumvented the small problem of their offense stalling out before midfield by starting their drive on the LSU 1-yard-line. Defensive back Jimmy Legree picked off a Zach Mettenberger pass - one of several quick slants that had seen success early for LSU - and returned it 77 yards to set up the Gamecocks for a three-play touchdown drive that ended with a Connor Shaw pass to Ace Sanders on a rollout.

South Carolina has battled a suddenly resurgent LSU offense, but a pick of Zach Mettenberger set up a Connor Shaw touchdown pass to give the Gamecocks an early lead.
The story so far has been LSU’s relative effectiveness on offense. A week after Florida exposed just how inept Mettenberger and company have played of late, the Tigers have sustained long, balanced drives against the same Gamecocks defense that destroyed Georgia a week prior.
The Tigers' first-quarter field goal came after 16 plays and 7:47 on the clock, and LSU would respond to the South Carolina touchdown with an 11-play, 50 yard drive before Drew Alleman would miss a 33-yard field goal attempt.
