Reds extend Dusty Baker through 2014

Despite the team’s stunning loss to the Giants in the division series, the Reds are trusting in Dusty for two more seasons.

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Dusty Baker hasn't had much luck as a postseason manager. He's now lost nine consecutive elimination games (three this year, one in 2010, three in 2003 with the Cubs and two in 2002 with the Giants).

What goes along with that, though, is an excellent record of getting into the postseason; his teams have a .525 winning percentage, 1581 wins, six postseason appearances and one National League pennant.

So this announcement shouldn’t be too surprising:

The Reds won 97 games in 2012, the second-most in baseball, and the most for the franchise since 1976, when Cincinnati won 102 games and went on to sweep the Yankees in the World Series.

Baker, who turns 64 next June, had a health scare in September when he had some heart problems and what was termed a “mini-stroke” when the Reds were in Chicago; he was given a clean bill of health and returned to manage them in the Division Series.
