Rockies interviewing Jason Giambi for manager

Giambi will be the club’s last in-house candidate to interview for the job.

The Colorado Rockies are planning to interview first baseman Jason Giambi for their open managerial position, though no date has been set for the interview, per the Denver Post:

Giambi, 41, has never coached at any level.

He underwent hernia surgery last week to keep open the option of playing in 2013, delaying a potential meeting with Rockies executives. Though he has no experience running a team, Giambi has worked with Rockies players on their hitting and talked strategy frequently with former field boss Jim Tracy.

Giambi, who has spent the last 3½ years as a bench player in Colorado, will be the last in-house candidate to interview for the manager position before the club looks into outside help. The Rockies met with bench coach Tom Runnells over two days last week to discuss the manager vacancy. Triple-A manager Stu Cole was also rumored to be in the running but is a candidate only for a coaching spot, not the managing position.

Colorado has yet to narrow its list of outside candidates for the position, according to assistant general manager Bill Geivett, and the club has no timetable for hiring its new manager.
