Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann will undergo surgery Tuesday afternoon to repair damage to his right shoulder. McCann underwent a dye-cast MRI last week to determine the best course of action with regard to his injury, and doctors decided that an operation was necessary for a full recovery.

The rehab time for the procedure is expected to be four to five months, but an exact recovery plan will not be laid out until the Braves orthopedist conducts the procedure, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com:

The six-time All-Star played through pain for much of the 2012 season and his numbers suffered for it. McCann put up career-worst numbers in several offensive departments, hitting just .230/.300/.399 with 20 home runs and 67 RBI on the season. McCann's production suffered so much late in the season that he was benched in favor of David Ross for the team's Wild Card matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Braves are expected to exercise McCann’s $12 million contract option for 2013 despite the shoulder procedure.
