After a lengthy stint as Boston's pitching coach, Farrell managed the Toronto Blue Jays for the past two seasons, but rumors have long tied him to the managing gig in Boston.

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly hired John Farrell away from the Toronto Blue Jays to be the team’s new manager with a four-year contract.

Because Farrell is still under contract with the Blue Jays, the Red Sox will be required to give Toronto some type of compensation in exchange for his hiring. The assets going to Toronto won’t be announced for a few days, but the deal for Farrell is done, says Alex Speier of WEEI.
Like the deal that sent Theo Epstein to Chicago, both teams will end up receiving a player to complete the Farrell transaction, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. He adds that the player heading to Toronto was a big league player for Boston in 2012, so it appears that the Jays could be getting significant value here.
Farrell will reportedly be given a four-year deal, so he’ll be under contract with the Red Sox through the 2016 season. Over the past two years, he’s led the Blue Jays to a combined record of 154-170, dropping to 73-89 in 2012 after putting up a .500 season in his managerial debut.
