Mike Aviles heading to Blue Jays as John Farrell compensation

John Farrell was under contract to the Toronto Blue Jays as their manager for 2013. The Boston Red Sox wanted him for the same job, and Saturday, hired him.

With a year’s worth of contract left, the Jays asked for compensation, and Saturday, there were rumors that it would be a player who played in the major leagues for Boston in 2012.

According to Alex Speier of WEEI in Boston, that rumor is true:

However, an industry source has informed WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford that the Red Sox will send infielder Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays. The Red Sox will receive a player or cash in return, as Major League Baseball rules require that a trade involving one player moving to a team involve either cash or a player going to the other party to the trade.

Aviles, who will turn 32 in March, was Boston’s regular shortstop for most of 2012, hitting .250/.282/.381 in 136 games with 13 home runs and 60 RBI, the latter two figures career highs. So Farrell will be in search for, among other things, a new shortstop for the Red Sox in 2013.
