Lance Armstrong stripped of 7 Tour de France titles, banned from cycling

Following recent doping revelations, Lance Armstrong has been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from competing by the International Cycling Union.

Lance Armstrong has been banned from competition and stripped of his seven Tour de France titles by the International Cycling Union following recent revelations about the legend’s doping regimen. The ICU made the ruling on Monday.

Last week, Armstrong stepped down as chairman of Livestrong, the cancer-focused charity he founded. He was also dropped by Nike, who’d been a major sponsor since 1996. The United States Anti-Doping Agency recently published a damning, detailed report that proffered a critical look at the evidence that Armstrong had doped throughout his cycling career.

Armstrong overcame testicular cancer in the late 1990s to regain his position atop cycling, but doping allegations have dogged him for a decade. A number of his teammates have claimed to witness Armstrong use illicit drugs or methods to get a leg up on the competition. Cycling as a sport has been ravaged by doping scandal like no other, and it’s unclear whether the ICU will name new champions of the Tours that Armstrong is vacating.
