Giants on brink of historic comeback

The San Francisco Giants need win just one more game to do something that has never been done in the history of baseball -- come back in two series in the same season by winning three straight elimination games in each series.

Even accomplishing that in the League Championship Series is rare. This is the sixth time in the wild-card era that a team that trailed three games to one in the LCS won Games 5 and 6.

Here’s what happened the other five times.

Four times, the team trailing three games to one continued on and won Game 7 and the series. Those were: 1996 NLCS (Braves over Cardinals), 2003 NLCS (Marlins over Cubs), 2004 ALCS (Red Sox over Yankees, 2007 ALCS (Red Sox over Indians).

The fifth time, the team that lost Game 5 also lost Game 6, but won the series in Game 7. That was the 2008 ALCS, when the Rays came back to win over the Red Sox after nearly having a spectacular meltdown (they had led 7-0 in the seventh inning of Game 5, only to lose 8-7, and then lost Game 6 at home).

So the Giants can make a bit of history Monday night. So can the Cardinals. If St. Louis wins, this would be the first time in a non-shortened season* that neither team in the World Series has 90 or more wins.

* The 1981 season, strike-shortened, didn’t have a team with 90 or more wins in the World Series; neither did the 1918 season, shortened to 130 games by World War I.
