Free agent and former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas is close to signing a one-year contract in China with the Guandong Southern Tigers, according to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports.

Arenas played most of his 11-year NBA career with the Wizards (2001 to 2010) a span which included the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award for the 2002-2003 season and three consecutive All-Star Game appearances from 2005 to 2007.
Arenas last played for the Memphis Grizzlies in 2011-2012, where he averaged 12 minutes of action in 17 games. He was signed by Memphis after he was released under the amnesty clause by the Orlando Magic.
Arenas gained notoriety after an incident during the 2009-2010 season when he brought a gun into the Wizards' locker room and got into an altercation with teammate Javaris Crittenton regarding a gambling debt. Both Arenas and Crittenton were suspended indefinitely following the incident, and eventually were forced to miss the remainder of the season.
If he does indeed sign, Arenas would join former Washington Wizards teammate James Singleton on the Southern Tigers. Singleton played 32 games for the Wizards in the infamous 2009-2010 season. They would be the only two American players on the Southern Tigers roster.
