Giants’ Marco Scutaro wins NLCS MVP honors

The Giants’ midseason acquisition continued his hot hitting and helped propel the Giants to the World Series with an MVP performance in the NLCS.

The Giants might be a team better known for their pitching staff than their offense, but Marco Scutaro did his best to change that perception in the NLCS. The second baseman set a LCS record with six multi-hit efforts in seven games and tied a Major League record with 14 hits during San Francisco's series win against St. Louis. In all, Scutaro went 14-for-28 with three doubles.

Scutaro, who will be making his first World Series appearance, contributed a 3-for-4 effort in Game 7 as the Giants crushed the Cardinals, 9-0. His emotions were running high during the ninth inning, as he realized he was on the brink of a trip to the Fall Classic.

“We’re nine runs up, ninth inning, Game Seven, so much stuff going through my head,” Scutaro said. “It’s just unbelievable.”

Fittingly, the lineup’s leading hitter caught the series’ final out. As rain pounded down on San Francisco’s celebration and Scutaro received his MVP trophy, he credited his teammates and the fans for their help.

“My teammates, I wouldn’t have done it without you,” Scutaro said. “And the fans, you guys are the best. You bring so much energy every single day. And also I want to thank the Giants family for trading me over here and giving me this opportunity. Thank you!”

Hunter Pence, whose three-run double in the third inning extended the Giants' lead to 5-0, praised his teammates' performance after the game.

“He was the rock for us,” Pence said. “He was the foundation. He started all this for us. We feel he’s the MVP, he carried us and it’s pretty incredible.”
