NFLPA wants Paul Tagliabue to recuse himself from bounty appeals

The NFLPA says that Paul Tagliabue also has a conflict of interest in hearing the appeal of four players suspended in the wake of the bounty case.

The NFLPA has asked that former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue recuse himself from hearing the appeals for four players suspended for their role in New Orleans Saints bounty program. The Players Association is citing several issues in making the request, most notably the link between Tagliabue and Goodell, according to Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports.

Tagliabue's law firm represents Goodell in the lawsuit filed by Jonathan Vilma, one of the four players implicated by the league in the bounty program. In addition to the representation issue, the NFLPA also pointed to concerns over the former commissioner is a witness in the case, undercutting his role in the hearing.

The Players Association has asked for a response from Tagliabue over the issues raised. The union also dangled the possibility of further legal action if the matter was not resolved.

Goodell succeeded Tagliabue as the league’s commissioner. The commissioner recused himself from the matter last Friday at the request of the NFLPA, appointing Tagliabue to take his place.

The appeals hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30.
