World Series 2012: Madison Bumgarner to start Game 2 for Giants

San Francisco Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy names Madison Bumgarner his starter for Game 2 of the World Series.

Giants' manager Bruce Bochy announced Tuesday evening that Madison Bumgarner will be his Game 2 starter, with Ryan Vogelsong set to go for Game 3, and Matt Cain to follow for Game 4.

We already knew that Barry Zito was going to start Game 1 of the World Series for the San Francisco Giants. After their thrilling comeback victory against the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS that took all seven games, he was really the only one ready to take the ball for Wednesday night. The question for Bochy was how his rotation would line up after Zito.

The 23-year-old Bumgarner was roughed up in his Game 1 start in the NLCS, giving up six runs in only 3⅔ innings. This prompted Bochy to start Tim Lincecum in Game 4 instead of Bumgarner. Lincecum didn't fair much better though, giving up four runs in 4⅔ innings.

So Bochy had to choose between the young Bumgarner, who had a terrific regular season but had struggled mightily so far in the post-season, or Lincecum, his erstwhile ace who sputtered through a difficult regular season and was moved to the bullpen for the playoffs. The Giants will roll with the youngster in Game 2, hoping the lefty can solve the Tigers' lineup.

Bumgarner has one career start against the Tigers, on July 1, 2011 in Detroit. He was dominant for 7⅓ innings, striking out nine and giving up only one run.
