Ryan Zimmerman undergoes shoulder surgery

The Nationals’ third baseman is expected to be fully recovered in time for spring training.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder on Thursday, according to a report by Bill Ladson of MLB.com.

Zimmerman’s procedure was succesful and is expected to have a full recovery in time for Spring Training in 2013.

Zimmerman had to bear with shoulder issues throughout the full season, including a stint on the 15-day disabled list, from which he returned in early May. He had four cortisone shots on his shoulder throughout the year.

The shoulder woes weren't an obstacle for Zimmerman in producing efficiently for the Nats: he hit .282, with 25 home runs and 95 RBI, and he played in 145 of the 162 games in the regular season. He also had a solid display against the St. Louis Cardinals in their division series, with 8 hits in 21 plate appearances.
