Jake Knott injury: Iowa State career likely over for top defender

Iowa State linebacker Jake Knott’s college career is likely over, as he will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery Monday.

Matthew Holst

Senior linebacker Jake Knott's season, and thus his career at Iowa State, is likely over as he will undergo shoulder surgery Monday.

Knott has dealt with recurring shoulder ailments each of the past two seasons. Despite reports that he would be sidelined Saturday against Baylor with the injury, Knott played and performed exceptionally, recording 11 tackles and winning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.

The injury is such that Knott could play through the pain while not further damaging the shoulder, however, reports ABC 5 News in Des Moines, further aggravating the injury is not the primary issue. Rather, Knott has opted for surgery to allow himself sufficient rehabilitation time so he can fully participate in the 2013 NFL Combine, should he be invited.

If indeed Knott’s season is over, he will finish his Iowa State career with 347 tackles, 10 forced fumbles and eight interceptions. His 347 tackles is the most in Iowa State history and fifth-best in Big 12 history.
