It was ultimately a disappointing season for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as they were eliminated from playoff contention on the next-to-last day of the season. The offseason will be cold comfort for Dodgers fans, as star center fielder Matt Kemp will have surgery on his left shoulder on Friday. Kemp does not know if it will just be a routine clean-up or something more serious, according to Dylan Hernandez.

Kemp battled injuries all season and was unable to match his MVP-runner-up season from 2011. He suffered from a hamstring issue for much of the summer and ended the season with just 403 at-bats. He hit .303 with 23 home runs and 69 RBI, a year after hitting .324 and leading the league with 39 home runs and 126 RBI.

Kemp originally injured the shoulder on Aug. 29 in a game against the Colorado Rockies. He collided with the wall in center field, and though he initially stayed in the game, he was later removed and needed stitches for a cut on his chin. The shoulder has bothered him ever since, but the Dodgers’ run at the second Wild Card urged him to keep playing.
